Profile of the

Master Philosophy of Science and Knowledge

Philosophy is about argumentative and conceptional clarification and rational reconstruction of thinking and action. The human conception of itself as well as the understandig of the lifeworld are criticially reflected in terms of the various levels of human approaches - from the very simple sensual perception up to sophisticated intellectual activities, such as scientific theory constructions.

Basic ideas and fundamental convictions are examinated and varified in terms of their areas of application. The Master Philosophy of Science and Knowledge addresses in particular the normative and epistemological requirements of science and technology.

Different forms of knowledge are examined on the one hand in terms of their theoretical perspective (epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognition, philosophy of science), and on the other hand in ethical and practical terms (ethics, social philosophy, political philosophy,engineering results assessment etc.).

Studying the research-oriented master "Philosophy of Science and Knowledge" requires philosophical expertise and focuses on the five following core areas:

·       Philosophy of Signs and Language 

·       Philosophy of Cognition

·       Philosophy of Science

·       Philosophy of Technology, Ethics of Science and Technologoy

·       Development of philosophy in the scientific-technical world

In the above mentioned areas students are requested to investigate on the various forms of practices and dynamics of knowledge and their interpenetrations. Students will complete their work techniques, practise the different philosophical methods (phenomenologie, hermeneutics, dialectics, logic modeling etc.), develop their skills in terms of autonomous studying and research, and form their own research profile.

Entirely philosophical positions in the working world are limited to reasearch and education at universities, research institutes and the area of journalism, e. g. publishers, TV- editors, newspaper and radio editing or to freelance authoring.

The master course "Philosophie of Science and Knowledge" trains formal and transdisciplinary thinking and thus responds to the request of professional competences: such as creative problem-solving, clarification and interpretation of circumstances, analysis of arguments, conflict and knowledge management. 

In connection with high reflection skills these analytic and communicative competences form a positive
'"dowry" for a great number of professional fields.

Professional fields

Graduates of the Master Course "Philosophy of Sciene and Knowledge" may focus fully philosophical jobs in research and teaching at universities and academies or independent research institutions; as well as jobs in the area of journalism for an audience interested in philosophy at publishing houses, broadcasting and radio stations. Due to trainings in formal and transdisciplinary thinking, the master course does also serve the specific request for professional key competencies such as creative problem solving, clarification and interpretation of facts and circumstances, analysis of arguments, conflict and knowledge management. Theses ressources are a positiv "dowry" for a great number of professional fields, in particular for all forms of consultancy services and adult education.




Master course "Philosophy of Sciences and Knowledge" at the TU Berlin


Philosophy is about rational reconstruction of thinking and action in every day life, science and arts. In doing so philosophy covers different cognitive efforts such as reflection, analysis and the methodical examination by means of rational and critical thinking. Philosophy is asking questions, which have not yet been answered and which cannot be answered by science in general. Newertheless these questions are of crucial importance for our life. Basic concepts are not just postulated, but called into question and clarified. Thus philosophy contributes to understanding current and future developments in knowledge societies and creates orientation.


The research-oriented Master Course "Philosophy of Science and Knowledge" has been accredited in 2008 and has been providing systematical dimensions in particular acquirements in logic, epistemology, philosophy of language, of mind and science, practical philosophy (from ethics over theory of action to political philosophy) aesthetics, nature philosophy, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of society and technical philosophy. The philosophical-historical dimension of the course develops the ability of reflecting the philosophical tradition in its meaning for our self-image today.

Conections with other sciences

The manifold linking with other sciences is the profile-building feature of this master course.Thus the area of philosophy of language and signs is spanning a connection with linguistics, semiotics, literature, music and arts. Philosophy of Sciences and Technology as well as theory of action and ethics of science and technology is reflecting the descriptive and normative basics of mathematics, natural, architectural, planning and technological sciences; it also reflects the consequences of scientific and technological developments on our life. Studies of the development of the scientific-technological world provide links to historical, cultural and sociologial studies.

Qualification goals

The Master Course "Philosphy of Science and Knowledge"  conveys the access to various methods and scopes of philosophy of science and knowledge. The study course enables students to work on historical and systematical questions of philosophical nature by means of hermeneutic interpretation of texts and the logic reconstruction of arguements. As well as to develop reasoned opinions regarding philosophical problems. The aquisition of instrumental competences such as the scientific interpretation of philosophical, also foreign-language texts and the handling of bibliographical resources serve this purpose as well. The master course provides the competences to handle philosophical questions methodicially ensured and with adequate contents and to be able to present them either in oral or written form when dealing with primary texts and research literature. Thus the master course provides the necessary conditions for doctorate studies.

With succesful completion of the studies you will achieve the academic masters degree  „Master of Arts“ (M. A.)

Study design and organisation

Standard period of study

The standard period of study including the Masters Thesis amounts to four terms. Contents and structure of the studies as well as the whole examination process are organised in a way that you can complete your studies within these four terms.


The teaching portefolio is sumerized in teaching and qualification units, so called "modules. They differ in compulsery (P), optional (W) and compulsory voting (WP) modules. Compulsery modules have to be studied. Compulsery modules are to be choosen in an assigned catalogue. Optional modules can be choosen out of the whole range of subjects at the "Technische Universität Berlin" and other universities as well as other higher national and international education institutions providing the right to award doctorates.


Every module is concluded with an assessed module examination, either in oral or written form or in an equivalent examination performance. Together with the Master Thesis in the last term all modules constitute the master examination.

Creditpoints according to the ECTS

Study and course achievments are proved by means of a creditpoint system. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) forms the calculation base for awarding the credit points (CP). The number of CP marks the average of the quantitative work load which has to be provided in order to meet the study and course requirements. Times for prescence, for prior and post-processing of the courses, for the aquisition of records of study and aquivalent course achievments, for the preparation of module examinations and examination periods are taken into consideration. One credit point corresponds to 30 hours of work. In general 30 CP have to be aquired per term. The entire work load of the Master Course "Philosophy of Science and Knowledge" amounts to a total of 120 CP (= 3600 h). Though, 90 CP are alloted to the modules (=2700 h) and 30 CP to the master thesis (= 900 h).

Study abroad

In order to develope your personality as well to enhance the knowledge in the field of comparative international and intercultural science your are suggested to spend study time abroad. In the event that you are planning a study-related stay abroad during your studies, you are strongly recommended to participate in relevant face-to-face courses of the Student Advisory Service beforehand. The authorized representative of the faculty I for studying abroad will support you in choosing the university and in composing your curriculum.


Final master's examination 

The master examination is to determine wether you are able by means of your study to respond to professional requirements, considering being prepared for the changes in the world of work and being disposed for the necessary professional knowledge, skills and methods. Which enable you to in-depth scientific work, to critical thinking about social connections and to social responsible action by using and developping findings with social and economic impacts in mind.


The master thesis forms the final part of the master's examination after having succesfully concluded all modules of the master study course. In the Master Thesis you ought to show that you are capable of working -  independently with scientific methods and within a certain deadline- on a problem from the area "Philosophy of Science and Knowledge (Philosophie des Wissens und der Wissenschaften").

Study and examination achievements completed at other universities are recognised by the examination board of the Faculty if they correspond to the performances required in the examination regulation of the Master Course "Philosophy of Science and Knowledge" at the TU Berlin. Study guidance and mentor system

The participation at the course guidance of the Master Course "Philosophy of Science and Knowledge" is obligatory at the outset of the studies. The attendence will be attested by a certificate which has to be submitted at the registration of the Master's thesis. Furthermore, each semester you have to attend mentoring discussions with a lecturing tutor of the Master course and talk about your study expirience, progress, success and planning. The role of the mentors consits in providing you support in terms of your our study organisation, giving you feedback regarding your study and examination achievements, helping you with problems concerning your studies as well as conselling you in regards to your job-orientated profile.
