Department for Ethics and Philosophy of Technology
Did you ever want to meet a cyborg? Would you be willing to try in vitro generated meat for reasons of sustainability? Would you appreciate the opportunity for same-sex couples to have shared genetically related offspring? Do you consider your smartphone to be a proper extension of your mind? Are you concerned that “Big Data” might undermine your personal autonomy? Would you like your grandmother to be entrusted in a robot’s care? And do you already wonder about the pros and cons of autonomous vehicles? Then you are concerned with philosophical and ethical issues regarding technology. Welcome to the Department for Ethics and Philosophy of Technology.
The department’s area of expertise includes philosophical and ethical issues regarding the relation between humanity, environment and technology, technology assessment and philosophical challenges in the scientific-technological and increasingly globalising world.
Core areas of research and teaching include ethics and applied ethics – in particular ethics of technology, biomedical ethics and food ethics – as well as philosophy of technology and philosophical anthropology. Key aspects of research comprise the conceptual and ethical analysis of recent technological developments, the systematic as well as historical placement of evaluative and normative stances on technology, technology’s impact on human self-understanding and – not least – moral and societal consequences of ambivalent technological progress.
The Department for Ethics and Philosophy of Technology provides courses for the institute’s degree programmes “B.A. Culture and Technology – Core discipline Philosophy”, “M.A. Philosophy of Science and Knowledge”, , “M.A. Theory and History of Science and Technology” and “Philosophy within interdisciplinary studies”.
