Prof. Marcin Milkowski (Warsaw): "Pluralism about explanatory pluralism (in cognitive (neuro)science)"

Art der Veranstaltung:
Vortrag
Beschreibung:

Explanatory pluralism” means different things to different people. Some defend it to argue for the viability of dynamical and radically embodied approaches to cognition (Dale, Dietrich & Chemero 2009). Others view it as a non-reductionist view (McCauley & Bechtel, 2001), in particular in the debate over intertheoretical relations. One can also be an explanatory pluralist by assuming that there are multiple valid explanatory frameworks, including causal explanations, intentional explanations, and mathematical explanations. In my talk, following Bouwel (2014) proposal regarding explanatory pluralism in psychiatry, I will distinguish various kinds of pluralism and their stance on integration and unification in cognitive (neuro)science. Moreover, my stress will be on the price one must pay for being a pluralist (at least in some versions of explanatory pluralism). My claim is that there is no free lunch and that explanatory pluralism may be detrimental for explanatory understanding.
