Robin Löhr (Eindhoven) Christian Michel (Edinburgh): "How can we explain linguistically odd sentences?"

Why does “John grew a large beard and healthy plants” sound odd? The answer seems to involve two different senses of ‘grow’. We can actively grow a healthy plant by watering it, for example. However, a beard or a pimple grows more or less without any intervention. Philosophically we may contemplate about whether we really have to do with two senses of the word ‘grow’. What matters for cognitive science is that our linguistic mind clearly has a problem with the sentence. We argue that linguistic oddness is a kind of prediction error. If this is true, then we have a nice illustration of what it can mean for the mind to be a prediction machine and also how linguistic oddness is produced.
